Court. Gamepad controls are smart and intuitive to the point that you’ll

puzzle.  Sherlock vs. Jack is superb when it sticks to the meat and
potatoes of the actual Ripper crimes. You get to examine the body of
Annie Chapman with Holmes’ trusty magnifying glass less than an hour
after her death, experiment with butcher knives to see what sort of
weapon is being used in the murders, and even get caught up in the
Leather Apron frenzy. The game is also quite truthful, if a bit linear,
immersing you in the real murders and letting you deduce the answers to
questions about what hand the killer used when cutting, how strong he
was, his knowledge of anatomy, and so forth.

Along with playing detective at the
Ripper crime scenes, Holmes and Watson roam around Whitechapel doing
the delivery-boy shuffle.  Everybody you run into wants a favor before
helping you out, so you find yourself analyzing perfumes for a madam in a
brothel, trapping a snake in a pet shop, stopping a gas leak to
liberate a satchel of stolen jewels, tracking down a stolen cane and so
on. At least the item puzzles have enough internal logic that you can
figure them out without resorting to a walk-through.

altogether. You also may end up wrecking into a few more rocks or other
immovable objects than you’d prefer due to character movement not being
quick enough or the sometimes-wonky physics pushing you toward an object
even though you were turning in the opposite direction. The game’s
primary mode is the championship mode, where you move from level to
level, hitting the score targets and eventually taking on the big kahuna
of surfing, Tank, in the last stage.

Daxter – Sony PSP

If you’ve played either Jak II or
Jak 3, you’ll feel quite at home with Daxter, because the layout of
Haven City and the mission-based structure of the gameplay are identical
to those of the previous games. In each level, you have several
objectives to complete. There’s the main objective that has been laid
out for you, which might consist of killing enemies, destroying insect
hives, or collecting objects. As you’re playing through, you can also
choose to do two optional secondary objectives, which are reminiscent of
Jak games of old, collecting Metal Bug gems and precursor orbs. Playing
cleanup is also easier later, since you’ll often have better weapons
and moves to get through the level more quickly. In fact, the way this
works is done extraordinarily well, giving you quite an incentive to
play through again to hunt for all the items. Daxter is also able to do
some light platforming, including double-jumping and scaling
climbable-looking surfaces. The dynamic that is most interesting,
however, is that his sprayer also serves as a propulsion device,
allowing Daxter to hover or boost up in the air, giving him more
distance and height than merely jumping would allow.

You’ll spend most of the game
switching between the sprayer as a weapon and the sprayer as a
platforming device, and it all works quite effortlessly. Most of the
gameplay has you proceeding from one area to the next, fighting, and
maneuvering around various enemies and obstacles, and fighting large
bosses. One is the zoomer, which Daxter uses in a couple of different
missions to chase down enemies or objectives that would be out of reach
if he were simply on foot. There are a few other great mechanics, like
the level that requires you to jump across the tops of moving trains, or
the level that is practically taken out of Metal Gear Solid.

Kratos is more complex than his
angry facade would lead you to believe, and being able to see how he
relates to his blood relatives goes a long way toward making this god
slayer feel like a normal man with a few larger-than-life problems. The
technical range is particularly impressive because the game floods the
screen with enemies and special effects without skipping a beat, and the
artistic flourishes give every creature a unique personality and each
location a different feel. The brutal combat continues the trend of
shrinking the console experience down to the portable world. Belting out
combos that stretch well into the dozens is a snap, thanks to
razor-sharp controls that make it a savage joy to rip your enemies to
shreds.

Star Wars: The Force Unleashed II – PlayStation 3

In the game the watery planet of
Kamino, Darth Vader hovers over a familiar figure. It looks to be
Starkiller, the original game’s leading man and Vader’s unauthorized
apprentice.  Excellent voice acting and facial animations give cutscenes
emotional impact, and a sequence near the end of the game in which you
are plagued by visions is a great touch that melds storytelling with
gameplay. The game’s art design is the other standout facet. On the
world of Cato Neimodia, a rich color palette of gold, orange, and red
makes an opulent palace come alive. A visit to an important planet in
the Star Wars canon may have you excited to explore its humid regions. A
great deal of artistry went into making these locales leap off the
screen, and it’s regrettable that many of them are so similar that one
bleeds right into the next. Armed with your dual sabers and some of the
same basic Force powers of the original, you leave behind a trail of
storm troopers, AT-ST walkers, and other trooper and walker variants.

You do so by slashing them with
your dual light sabers, zapping them with Force lightning, flinging them
back with Force push, and using Force grip to fling objects and enemies
around. The powerful physics are still impressive to behold as you toss
around barrels and grab TIE fighters out of the air, as is using Force
repulse to clear away a crowd of menacing robotic spiders. You still
grab objects other than those you intend, and you still fling junk in
directions other than that of your target. The Force Unleashed II adds a
few new abilities to your repertoire. One is Force sense, which is a
guidance system that directs you to your objective and negates the need
for a map.

It is an action adventure game that
will keep those thumbs of yours very busy from the moment you press the

Causing explosions leads to chaos, which functions as a type of currency
in Just Cause 2.

From the air, you can perform some satisfyingly stunts and with your

Condemned Criminal Origins – Xbox 360

You play as an investigator tailing
a serial killer while struggling to keep your own sanity as you face
off against what seems like an army of depraved sociopaths. FBI Agent
Ethan Thomas is a sullen man who’s part of the Serial Crimes Unit, so
it’s little wonder he isn’t more cheerful. The game begins with Agent
Thomas on a routine assignment: Someone’s been brutally murdered in a
bad part of town, and he’s there with the police to figure out what
happened and to clean up any remaining mess. Thomas winds up implicated
in some serious crimes, but not before he has a run-in with some sort of
a madman who spares his life just barely. Bent on finding the truth,
his assailant, and his missing pistol, Thomas goes off on his own, with
nothing but a cell phone, a Taser-style stun gun, and his forensic tools
to aid him. The only other person he can depend on, save himself, seems
to be a colleague of his who’s willing to stay in touch by phone,
helping Thomas to analyze evidence so he can slowly connect the dots
that lead to some disturbing discoveries.

Condemned
is kind of like a first-person shooter, except instead of shooting,
there’s mostly just a lot of pure, bloody brawling. You’ve got
everything from metal pipes, to nail-covered two-by-fours, to fire axes,
to sledgehammers, to signposts. Each weapon is rated differently for
speed, range, power, and defense, though the differences can be pretty
subtle. There’s some striking artificial intelligence at work, combined
with some amazingly, frighteningly lifelike animations that will make
you wince as if in pain or in anticipation of it. Your foes cannot be
reasoned with; as they’re lunatics with a thirst for blood who’ll rush
out at you from the shadows, flailing anything they can get their hands
on while trying to kill you.

In this mode, your character can
link together moves and build combos that aren’t otherwise possible.
Finally, the guard gauge depletes as you block attacks. If you let it
run out, your character enters a vulnerable crumple state so be careful.
 Each character has the tools for building devastating combos and
quickly navigating the field. This uniform character design also carries
over to vitality. Each character’s health gauge is broken down into
sections for additional clarity. Once you learn how many sections a
certain combo shaves off, it’s easy to see when to cash it in and finish
the match. There’s also an Arcade mode that’s heavier on the action and

In the game you can enter Jack
Slate, a burly, bullet-resistant cop who has no problem punching,
kicking, and shooting his way through legions of bad guys in the name of
justice. Jack’s brutal move set is varied yet uncomplicated, making it
fairly easy to dish out pain in a number of enjoyable and satisfying
ways. His canine companion, Shadow, is more than happy to lend his teeth
and claws to the cause, and playing as Shadow affords you a first row
seat for some of the most ruthless maulings this side of Cujo. There is
also a consistent sense of energy and dedication to the narrative that
keeps things moving along nicely. Simple light and heavy strikes combine
into brutal combos; while blocks and counters help you deal with Jack’s
quick-fisted foes. Get close to an enemy and you can clinch up, a move
that can result in repeated strikes, a throw, or even a hostage
situation. Grabbing an enemy and using him as a moving shield can come
in very handy, and kicking him over a nearby ledge when you’re through
is immensely satisfying.

In addition to knocking an enemy
out or throwing him to his doom, you can beat him to within an inch of
his life and perform a brutal slow-motion takedown. Savage kicks and
snapped necks are just some of the finishers in your arsenal, and Jack’s
feral grimace lets you know that you’re not the only one enjoying the
carnage. If you tap a button when the prompt appears, you will proceed
to wrench the gun free from your enemy and slowly target his head.
Disarms headshots, takedowns and other slick moves fill up a meter that
allows you to enter Focus mode. This mode slows down time while cranking
up your power and damage resistance, making it a great way to get out
of a tight spot or just to put an exclamation point on a particular
kill.
